João Pessoa, the second greenest city in the world, is located at the most easterly point of the Americas and 25 minutes drive from the Hotel. Founded in 1585, it was renamed in 1930 to honor a famous governor and vice-presidential candidate who was assassinated.
The 16th century São Francisco Church and Monastery of São Bento is one of the oldest and considered one of the most beautiful in the country.
It is a city of many beaches, set off with coconut trees in the white sand, running some seven kilometers from the area of Tambaú to Cabo Branco. João Pessoa prohibits the construction of high rise building along the beach and the road along the shore is filled with bars and restaurants. It has an active night life as well as various shops of folk art and open markets. A lighthouse at the end of Cabo Branco marks the easternmost land of the Americas, the place where the sun first rises on the continent.
Don’t miss the chance to visit the Areia Vermelho (Red Sand beach) that only appears at low tide, also see the recently restored historical center of the city, and to walk around the Santa Catarina fort in the port town of Cabedelo, built in 1589.
João Pessoa has a major airport recently upgraded and that is scheduled to become an international airport in 2008 so that it can receive flights directly from Europe. It is a city of 700,000 where you can find shopping malls, department stores, and varied restaurants.
